Cape Sounion

We'll travel along the coastal road past the famous beaches of Athens as we make our way to Cape Sounion. Sounion is a magnificent place at the southernmost tip of the Attic Peninsula. At Cape Sounion you'll get a chance to enjoy spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon (440 BCE).
According to legend Aegeus, the King of Athens, was waiting on his son Theseus to return from killing the Minotaur in Crete. Theseus, by mistake, forgot to change his sail from black to white; upon seeing the black sail and thinking his son Theseus was dead Aegeus jumped to his death from the cliffs into the sea below, thus giving the Aegean Sea its name.
The earliest mention to Sounion is in Homer's epic poem, "The Odyssey" (8th cen. BCE), when the temple at Sounion was dedicated to the god of the sea, Poseidon who was ultimately the cause of Odysseus's suffering.
